Nonny's Bakery and Cafe in Masi

Some of you may know us, but for those that don’t, Masicorp is an NGO that works primarily in the field of education from pre-school to university within Masiphumelele, on the old Kommetjie Road between Noordhoek and Kommetjie on the Cape Point Route.

Beyond this, there is a small team of people working on enterprise development and they have recently let us know of a new enterprise that has opened in Masiphumelele, called Nonny’s Bakery and Café. The café is situated right next door to the (Bicycling Empowerment Network) BEN bike shop so Nonny’s makes an ideal start or ending place on a township bicycle tour, run by AWOL tours.

Nonny serves light refreshments – including a delicious range of freshly baked cakes and muffins – as well as tasty lunch dishes such as pies, stews with rice or pap, toasted sandwiches, burgers, etc. She caters for all tastes! Nonny also has a lovely garden area at the back of her café where customers can sit in the shade of a small pergola and enjoy delicious home-made food in pretty surroundings.

For local organisations, Nonny can provide cakes to order, pre-booked light lunches or any other catering needs your organisation might have. She already delivers sandwiches daily to a sewing programme in Masi and often has catering orders from the library for ad hoc meetings or get-togethers that are being held there.

Nonny is fully registered with the City of Cape Town and complies with all their hygiene requirements.

So if you are in Masi or nearby, why not stop at Nonny’s:

  • to grab a coffee
  • have lunch with your friends, your colleagues or your team
  • order sandwiches and/or cupcakes for a meeting
  • buy beautifully decorated and tasty cakes for that special person or occasion.

Nonny herself hails from Koffiefontein in the Free State and her love of baking was inspired by her grandmother. After finishing school, she worked at various commercial outlets and then went to catering school in Johannesburg.  She relocated to Cape Town and worked at an in-store bakery for 6 years, before trying her hand at nursing and home-care. Baking however was her passion and Nonny went out to seek support from friends and family and in the process came into contact with Masicorp and the band of volunteers.

Masicorp is  an organisation that has assisted people to help themselves for the past 12 years.  Their main focus is education, but there is a team that works on enterprise development. Through Masicorp contacts and assistance with funds and donations, Nonny’s dream became a reality and she opened the doors to Nonny’s Bakery and Cafe in September 2012.  Nonny speaks 7 languages and converses easily with her multi-cultural clientele that frequent or visit the cafe.
Nonny’s Bakery and Café is a lovely little eating spot. The café is situated just a few metres along on the right hand side once you’ve turned into the main entrance to the Masiphumelele township.

Nonny can be contacted on (+27) 071 9986495.
