109km and 36,000 riders of all ages and sizes in padded lycra cycling shorts, space-age looking helmets and shoes that were not made for walking will be taking to the streets of Cape Town in the largest individually timed cycle event in the world. We dare to say the most beautiful cycle event in the world too – but then again we are biased!
Bicycles and cyclists, sweat, water, refreshment stations, medical stations, marshals, marshal vests, orange traffic cones, straw hay bales, red hazard tape, red flags, signage, blankets, brooms, gazebos, toilet facilities and toilet paper (how much toilet paper do you need for 35 000 people???) are just part of the event called the Cape Argus Pick ‘n Pay Cycle Tour which takes place on the 9th March 2014.
Did we mention spectators? In addition to the thousands on their bicycles – some riding for the competition but most doing it for fun, are the spectators and the crowds… thousands and thousands of children, pensioners, men, women, rich, poor who cheer the cyclists on from various spots along the route. Capetonians help with broken bikes and changing tyres, the splash water on overheated and exhausted peddlers and will share anything from bananas to beers throughout the day.
It is an event like no other. The starting line for the 2014 Argus is in Hertzog Boulevard at the Cape Town Civic Centre,
The Argus Cycle Tour route – all 109 km – will take riders onto the N2, down the M3 along the False Bay Coast…
through Simon’s Town,
past the entrance to the Cape of Good Hope,
along the Atlantic coast,
over Chapman’s Peak Drive
through Hout Bay and up Suikerbossie,
and on to the Cape Town Stadium in Green Point.
Capetonians and visitors who are not cyclists and not taking part and have no interest should be warned though… major routes in Cape Town are closed for the day and some roads from Sat 8 March 2014. See the road closure information HERE…
On the Cape Point Route most of the roads on the False Bay Coastline are closed from 06h15 – 14h30 and on the Atlantic side from 06h30 to 16h00. Chapman’s Peak Drive and Hout Bay will be closed until 17h30.
