Summer Sundowner Spots on the Cape Point Route

Summer is what Cape Town does best!   With summer comes the inevitable and much adored ritual of “sundowners” . People watch the sunset all over the world but we think Cape Town has perfected the art of sundowners. In this picturesque city, with ocean vistas, sea views and mountainous backdrops – watching the sun set in a beautiful place is not hard to do. Capetonians make the effort to be settled in somewhere beautiful, somewhere comfortable, somewhere with friends and somewhere with a cocktail or chilled glass of wine!

There’s nothing more satisfying than relaxing at the end of the day with a cool glass, good mates and a spectacular sunset.  Here are some of our favourite sundowner spots on the Cape Point Route- packed with ambience, aesthetics and a great view are all part of the sundowner package!  Please note that while Capetonians are smug about their sea, it is not an essential ingredient for sundowners.

Mariners Wharf: Hout Bay
Mariner’s Wharf at Hout Bay Harbour is known for its seafood, harbourside ambience and great views. The Wharfside Grill Deck is ideal for Sundowners, as the sun dips into the ocean! It seats 60 and the adjoining Crayclub Bar serves nautical cocktails while overlooking the bay. Patrons can stay for a seafood meal after the sun goes down.  Tel 021 790 1100 Read More…

Chapman’s Peak Hotel: Hout Bay
This stalwart at the foot of Chapman’s Peak is a popular watering hole. It’s a lovely old hotel with a deck that catches the last rays of the setting sun and view across Hout Bay and the beach. The sun sinks behind the mountains and patrons are cast in a rosy glow of sunlight on the deck. There’s an excellent selection of local and imported beers but the family is well known for their love of wine which is extended to their restaurant wine list. Many stay on for their famous grilled calamari! Tel: 021 790 1036 Read More…

The Lookout Deck: Hout Bay
The spectacular wooden deck with a view over Hout Bay Harbour is what justifiably gives this establishment its name.  The deck is extremely popular for sundowners not least due to the fact that it has a champagne and oyster bar which begs to be consumed as the sun set. There’s also a bar area with high bar stools and a great wine list and some sensational cocktails. Check in with them as many summer evenings also feature live music which allows one to linger longer and then tuck into some sushi as well!  Tel:  021 790 0900

Cape Point Vineyards Picnic Area: Noordhoek
If you can picture yourself on a green lawn, on a blanket, amongst vineyards & friends, with an endless view of the Noordhoek valley, plus award winning Cape Point Vineyards wine and a picnic hamper then this is your sundowner spot. It doesn’t get much better than this for a sundowner setting. In summer the tasting room is located at the Noordhoek Estate so you can do a full wine tasting too! What’s more the summer bar sells craft beers and soft beverages in addition to their delicious range of wines.  They’re open until 8pm so sundowner picnics are on! Booking is essential however.  Tel: 083 444 7088 Read More…

The Toad in the Village:  Noordhoek
The Toad himself always says “We think you’ll like it” and we think you’re guaranteed to have some fun here. This is one of those end of the day sundowner spots where the locals gather under the leafy oaks of Noordhoek Farm Village and the sun drops down behind the mountains with a pink glow in the sky and long rays across the village green. There’s cold beer on tap, easy-drinking wines, a relaxed environment and lots of laughter where everyone feels welcome. This is probably our favourite sundowner venue without the sea view!  Tel: 021 789 2973 Read More…

Monkey Valley Resort: Noordhoek
Set in a forest of ancient Milkwood trees on the southern slopes of Chapmans Peak Drive- the open deck and treetop pub are forever popular for evening sunsets, chilled sundowers and one of the most splendid views of Noordhoek.  If there is a summer southeasterly wind blowing (as can happen in Cape Town) then take note as this is one of those secret wind-free spots too!  It’s hard to beat the sundowner view from the treetops, and nature in Cape Town summer seldom disappoints. Tel: 021 789 1391 Read More…

Blue Water Cafe: Kommetjie
The Restaurant is tucked into a garden with a huge tree (with a swing for little people) and painted tables and umbrellas that look out across the wetlands and beach towards Chapman’s Peak. The setting is sublime for sundowners and the view completely uninterrupted. It’s very popular to do the evening beach horse ride on Noordhoek Beach and return to Imhoff Farm in time for sundowners after your ride.  It’s definitely worth staying for dinner – the pizza is legendary. Tel: 021 783 2007 Read More…

Black Marlin Restaurant: Simon’s Town
Unobtrusively set in one of the coves on the False Bay Coastline on route to or from Cape Point Nature Reserve, this restaurant is right on the water and is one of the reasons Capetonians get smug about their sea views.  Although the sun sets on “the other side”, this is a delicious sundowner spot.  You have to experience the pink hues of a soft sunset from this venue to truly understand the magic. There is an excellent wine list for those wine-and-sunset snobs!  Tel : 021 786 1621

Boulders Beach Restaurant: Simon’s Town
From humble beginnings, Boulders Beach Restaurant has become one of Simon’s Towns best kept secrets.  The deck overlooks False Bay and it is not uncommon to have penguins waddle up the steps whilst you watch the sunset and sip on cocktails! A truly unique experience, coupled with old world charm and hospitality.  The deck can get quite busy during the summer season so it is advisable to book a spot on the deck for your sundowners. Tel: 021 786 1758 Read More…

Fish Hoek Galley: Fish Hoek
This is the only sundowner venue that is quite literally on a beach. The beach location gives a lively atmosphere and there is a relaxed vibe as couples stroll on the beach, kids play, paddlers paddle and evening comes to a close.  The ambient light at sunset is glorious and it is easy to while away the evening watching the beach activity from the comfort of the restaurant (which incidentally has various sections for dining choices).  Tel: 021 782 3354

Polana: Kalk Bay
The cocktail lounge section at Polana is built on the rocks.  You can sit on the wellworn leather couches or on the cushioned window and watch the waves lapping (or crashing) on the rocks while sipping on a ‘Jam Jar’ or multiple bottles of wine. Polana positively encourages languishing over sundowners – the wine list is extensive, there’s a colourful assortment of cocktails and the rocks turn orange as the sun dips behind you. There’s also a great meat and seafood tapas selection.  Take a wander onto the harbour wall if you can drag yourself off the windowsill!  Tel : 021 788 7162

Cape to Cuba
As the name suggests, this Restaurant and Bar is Cuban themed with a Caribbean laidback decor. The most popular spot for sundowners is the Che-Bar (complete with sea sand at your feet), a setting on the waters of Kalk Bay and Classic Cuban Cocktails. From Cuba Libre to Cuban Sunrise (you may stay all night!) to their famous mojito’s!  They are rumoured to hold the record for the bar to sell the most mojitos in Cape Town.  Tel: 021 788 1566

The Brass Bell:  Kalk Bay
The Brass Bell is a Cape Town and Kalk Bay institution and a fabled sundowner venue. Walk under the subway to the other side of the train line and then you know how close you are to the waters edge. There’s a choice of spaces and bars – all of them within an arm’s breadth of the sea. Don’t be surprised if you get a periodic splash! Toast the setting sun with seaviews, a vibrant atmosphere, contempory cocktails or cold beers. Some evenings there is live music too. As they say when you are looking for a sundowner spot… Location, location, location… and a sunset!  Tel: 021 788 5455
