Winter Anchorage in Simon’s Town

Over 200 years ago the Dutch settlers found that the bay made an excellent winter anchorage that provided shelter from the devastating North West winds that grounded ships in Table Bay.

History

The Dutch settlers named the new found settlement after the first governor of the Cape Colony, Simon van der Stel.

When the British took over the Cape in the early 19th century they established a Naval base and since then the town has maintained a strong linked to sea and has a distinctive nautical feel about it. Just Nuisance, the only dog to be enlisted into the Royal Navy is one of Simon’s Town’s more colourful stories and he is honoured with a statue in main town square.
