Simon’s Town Penguin Festival: 13 October 2012

The Simon’s Town Penguin Festival is an annual festival of educational fun for young and old – all in the name of the endangered African penguin.
The opening of the event sees the release of a group of wild African penguins rehabilitated at SANCCOB, back into the wild at Seaforth Beach (Simon’s Town). The public is invited to come along and witness this moving event and proceed to join the festivities at the parking areas in front of Boulders Beach Lodge and Restaurant on Bellevue Rd.
This year’s festival features a cooking demonstration by a celebrity SASSI chef, a snake and reptile show, a raptor show, live spider exhibit, food stalls and loads of ‘edutainment’ for the kids. Visitors will also have the opportunity to meet and take pictures with SANCCOB’s famous ambassador penguins.

SANCCOB & Iziko Museum Marine Week

Iziko Museum and SANCCOB has organized a series of public engagement opportunities for this year’s National Marine Week. The theme for Marine Week “The Sea & Us” which aims to draw attention to the way human have impacted the oceans and marine life with pollution, exploitation of natural resources and human-induced climate change effects. To raise public awareness regarding the state of our oceans, Iziko South African Museum and SANCCOB invite both young and old to experience a walk through the “Rommel Tonnel” (translation in English, the “Garbage Tunnel”), to learn about how mankind has affected the oceans. The temporary exhibition will also highlight current mitigation and adaptation measures. Members of the public will be challenged to re-think their behavior and urged to sign a “Think blue, what can you do?” pledge. Members of the public will have an opportunity to meet SANCCOB’s ambassador penguin and learn about how people can effect change to ensure the survival of the critically endangered African penguin populations.
SANCCOB & City of Cape Town’s Blouberg Conservation Area Education Initiative

This year SANCCOB will join forces with the City of Cape Town’s Blouberg Conservation Area to bring learners from disadvantaged communities to experience conservation hands-on at our facilities. The curriculum aligned programme will see learners learn about sustainable marine practices and how they can help make a difference to the lives of seabirds and our precious marine environment.

To conclude the month of African Penguin Awareness, created through the Simon’s Town Penguin Festival, SANCCOB will host its annual Benefit Auction on Tuesday 30 October, this year hosted by Col’Cacchio Pizzeria Restaurant in Cavendish Square, Claremont. This prestigious black-tie event celebrates the work of SANCCOB and its conservation partners in the rescue and conservation of African Penguins. Enjoy an evening of dinner paired with wine accompanied by an auction for an excellent cause. Tickets cost R250 per person and include a welcome drink, canapés and dinner with paired wines.
