My Kingdom for a Cabin: Mid-Year Getaways

Did you Stay-at-home this Easter holiday?  Not organised enough, couldn’t get a last minute booking for accommodation?  Don’t stay home in the next school vacation.  The Western Cape has mid-year School Holidays between 22 June – 15 July 2013 and families head for the hills. Sneaking off with kids to a cozy winter cabin in Cape Town or a winter beach house on the Cape Peninsula is a great way to spend the holidays. Many Northern Hemisphere folk start their summer holidays too so Cape Town can be busy!

Cape Town is beautiful in winter. With a climate often compared to Northern California, the winter is mild. You may sometimes see snow on the mountains across the bay, there are a surprising number of crisp clear days (despite the forecasted rainy weather!),  its a fantastic time for water sports like diving, surfing and kayaking because there is little or no south-easterly wind.

All the major attractions in Cape  Town– from Table Mountain to Cape Point,  Kirstenbosch to the Penguins and from the Aquarium to Waterfront don’t go anywhere! The best part about travelling to the Cape Point Route during the mid-year break is that the accommodation is usually cheaper and restaurants have winter specials so your trip is a good deal cheaper than in summer!

We love winter – especially in a lovely self-catering home.  It’s great to get out there for a hike or a paddle or a surf and then grab a long lazy lunch. It’s a fun time to browse book stores and boutique shops or visiting one of those museums or galleries you keep meaning to investigate.  Then retire ‘home’ to sit by the fire and drink hot chocolate or red wine and read a book or play boardgames with the family.  It’s a great time for family bonding

stone mt cottageWe love cabins in the woods, mountain cabins and sea side cabins in winter. We love cozy self-catering getaways and feeling removed from the hustle and bustle of day-to-day living. We’ve done some research for you and found some great deals for mid-year winter getaways. But don’t think about it for too long. These places will be snapped up quickly!
