The 9th of August 2015 is Women’s Day in South Africa and this year it will be celebrated with a public holiday on Monday 10th August 2015. Woman’s day commemorates the 20 000 women who marched on parliament to petition against the pass laws in 1956 – led by Helen Joseph, Rahima Moosa, Sophie Williams and Lilian Ngoyi. Woman’s day honours their courage and strength to fight for a free and fair South Africa and the role they played in building the new South Africa.
Please note that this day is not about gender bias and that men are not excluded from celebrating, even though the day has come to be associated with treating and honouring women. It is an opportunity to recognize strong women, powerful women, women who believe in their convictions and women who stand up for their beliefs. It is not uncommon practice for women in South Africa to gather a group of their closest friends and participate in a fun activity on Women’s Day or Women’s Month! (I reiterate that men are welcome too!)
