ARGUS CYCLE TOUR: Sunday 11 March 2012

The Cape Argus Pick ‘n Pay Cycle Tour is the largest timed cycle event in the world and this year takes place on Sunday 12th March 2012. Approximately 35 000 cyclists from around the world enter this event and is one of major weekends for visitors in the Cape Town Calendar.

The route is 110km long and is one of the most beautiful cycling races in the world. The route starts in the city centre, down the M3 highway, then along the False Bay Coastline to Simon’s Town, past the entrance to Cape Point Nature Reserve , along the Atlantic Seaboard via Kommetjie and Noordhoek, a steady climb up Chapman’s Peak Drive and after a slog on the Suikerbossie Hill in Hout Bay it’s downhill to the finish line in Greenpoint – essentially covering the entire Cape Point Route in one day!

It is a massive event and Cape Town almost comes to a standstill with numerous road closures to accommodate cyclists. Over 2500 volunteers ensure the day runs smoothly with water stations, medical stations plus hospitality and entertainment zones especially at the finish line. In addition to the main event there is Junior Tour, a Tricycle Tour and a Mountain Bike tour as well as the 5 day Giro del Capo for international competitive cyclists. Cyclists come with their friends and families so it is a “High Demand” weekend in Cape Town.

Cape Point Route suggests booking your travel arrangements sooner rather than later.

Car Hire for Argus Cycle Tour 2012:

You are highly unlike to be able to pick up a hire car on arrival at the airport as there is a BIG demand for hire cars that weekend. We recommend you book NOW … click here.

Accommodation for Argus Cycle Tour 2012:

Most visitors often want to stay in the city centre for “logistical ease”  to the start and the finish! We know this usually means cycling to the start and cycling “home” after the race. Staying slightly further afield on the Cape Point Route means your friends and family can relax for longer and watch you ride past – for many without even leaving home (and the kids can go to the beach).  Many accommodation establishments offer transfers and the Simon’s Town – Cape Town train line offers FREE transport for participants (including the bike!) making it very easy to access the start and not worry about parking!

Here is  a selection of establishments that offer accommodation for the Argus Cycle Tour – the list is a sample of properties available for rent during Argus Weekend. Click here for more suggestions.

SIMON’ S TOWN QUAYSIDE HOTEL: Simon’s Town

Best spots for spectators to watch the Argus Cycle Tour Race on the Cape Point Route:

1.       Steenberg Main Road
Easily accessible vantage point – allowing spectators to see the cyclists as they come off the highway and head for the coastline

2.       Kalk Bay
Another very popular spot for spectators who combine breakfast visits at one of the many restaurants with cheering for their loved ones.

3.       Fish Hoek on Main
Accompanied by music and breakfast skottels – the good folk from Fish Hoek have their own “breakfast on main” Argus party near the Fish Hoek Circle to cheer on the cyclists

4.       Glencairn Beach
Very popular spot for the local residents with pedestrian access to the grassed area in front of the Glencairn Strip. Excellent long stretch to view the cyclists and 2 bars, a restaurant, curry house and pizza place make it a good refreshment station for spectators!

5.       Jubilee Square, Simon’s Town
Get there by train as there is always a great vibe in the centre of town around Jubilee Square.

6.       Noordhoek Farm Village
Another superb vibe outside (or inside) Noordhoek Farm village. The long stretch of road makes it easy to spot cyclists and there are refreshments aplenty at the restaurants at Noordhoek Farm Village. Access via foot for residents and via Silvermine Road for non-residents!

7.       Hout Bay (corner of Princess and Main Road)
Watch the relief as the cyclists come off Chapman’s Peak Drive and catch a breather before Suikerbossie Hill .

8.       Suikerbossie Hill, Hout Bay
It’s not the toughest hill on the route, but most participants dread this hill. They are tired and need lots of encouragement to get up the hill in anticipation of the home stretch. The entire hill is packed with spectators who set up for the day with skottel braais and picnics. Fun and festive spot to watch.

Cape Point Route wishes all the cyclists a safe ride. We hope it’s not too hot or too windy and wish for perfect conditions on Race Day. We encourage the citizens  of Cape Town to get out on the road to cheer and support all 35 000 cyclists – not only does your support help the cyclists, it’s a fun day out and it creates the warm welcome that Cape Town is known for sharing.

Don’t forget the Two Oceans marathon on 07 April 2012.  This ultra marathon takes place over the Easter weekend and classifies as one of the most scenic endurance marathons in the world as the route follows the coastline of the Cape Point Route.  The Easter weekend is a very busy weekend in Cape Town so book your accommodation early.
